Reading strategies for IGCSE Paper 1








- Don't read the whole extract first - highlight the key words in the question and scan the text to find those key words or similar words to locate the answer

- Use the paragraph shape and structure to help you -  if the paragraph starts with 'In ancient times...' 'In the 1700s....'  that is a big help with finding the right answers!

- Leave enough time to check and recheck at the end

- Remember to use grammar to help you! It doesn't matter if you can't understand every word, following the grammar of the text can still give you the right answers.

- Remember to use common sense to help you!

- Copy the answer correctly - it needs to be spelled correctly and if it is a plural word, it must have an s (e.g. "headphones")
